Restless Bush Cricket (Hapithus agitator)

Detailing the physical features, habits, territorial reach and other identifying qualities of the Restless Bush Cricket.

Updated: 11/18/2019; Authored By Staff Writer; Content ¬©www.InsectIdentification.org

The noisy Restless Bush Cricket is often heard in the hottest parts of summer, but its chirping lingers almost all year in hot humid states.

Powerful legs allow these crickets to jump away from danger, and onto food sources. Leaves and fruit from citrus trees are eaten by this species. Male Restless Bush Crickets have a bright yellow stripe on each wing. Females are completely brown.

In the warmest states in their range, the loud chirp may start as short bursts that begin to connect into one long trill. Short sequences that sound like an alarm are also created when courting. When choosing a mate, the two crickets use their antennae to determine if they make a suitable match. In other parts of their range, the males do not call for females, but may live closely enough to them that finding a mate is not difficult. When a non-calling male mates, a curious behavior is exhibited. The female is allowed to chew on his forewings, while she mates with him. It is not understood what benefit this is to the female and how detrimental it is to the male.

Note: An insect's reach is not limited by lines drawn on a map and therefore species may appear in areas, regions and/or states beyond those listed above as they are driven by environmental factors (such as climate change), available food supplies and mating patterns. Grayed-out selections indicate that the subject in question has not been reported in that particular territory.
